Workers Compensation Policy for Student Workers (Both Undergraduate Workers and Graduate Workers)
The University of Pennsylvania’s Workers’ Compensation Program provides medical and/or wage loss benefits to Student Workers (both undergraduate workers and graduate workers) who suffer an injury or illness in the course and scope of their employment. If you are a Student Worker at the University, you are covered by this policy.

Reporting a Claim
Student Workers are required to report all work-related accidents and illnesses immediately to their supervisor, even if they do not require medical treatment.
The supervisor, along with the Student Worker, is to report the claim to Broadspire. There are two (2) ways to report a claim:
OPTION 1: Phone
  • Report Claim over the phone by calling Broadspire at (888) 808-1440.
  • You will need your Penn ID number.
  • You will receive a claim number instantly, which you can give to your providers.

OPTION 2: Claims Reporting Form
Medical Treatment for Work-Related Injury and/or Illness
  • During the first 90 days of treatment, Student Workers MUST seek medical treatment from a panel provider.
  • The closest panel provider to campus is Occupational Medicine, which is located at 3400 Spruce Street, 2 Ravdin, Philadelphia, PA 19104.Occupational Medicine can assist Student Workers who seek medical treatment there with reporting their claim to Broadspire.  However, the Student Worker’s supervisor still needs to be notified of the work-related accident or illness, as described above.
  • Student Health as well as the Emergency Department are options for treatment during hours when Occupational Medicine is not open.
  • New Bolton Center panel
  • Morris Arboretum panel
If a Student Worker wishes to change healthcare providers during the initial 90-day period, they may do so, provided the visit is to another panel healthcare provider. Failure to treat with a panel provider for the first 90 days could result in non-payment of medical bills.
After the first 90-day period of treatment, a Student Worker may choose to:
  • continue treatment from the posted physician or specialist to whom the Student Worker was referred.
  • seek treatment from another duly licensed healthcare provider, provided that the Student Worker notifies their claims adjuster within five (5) days of the first visit to the non-panel healthcare provider.

Wage Replacement for Student Workers Unable to Work Due to a Work-Related Illness and/or Injury
  • If the workers’ compensation claim is approved and the Student Worker is unable to work in their employment position because of the illness or injury giving rise to the claim, lost wage benefits for that position will be paid in accordance with Pennsylvania law. Generally, wage-loss benefits become payable only after the Student Worker has been unable to work for more than seven (7) calendar days, with benefits beginning on the eighth day. If the Student Worker is unable to work for fourteen (14) or more calendar days, benefits for the initial seven-day waiting period may be paid retroactively.
  • When the Student Worker is able to return to their employment position, the return to work process will be initiated. Efforts will be made to reinstate the returning Student Worker to the same research group, project, lab, or assignment, or, if that position is no longer available, to a comparable research group, project, lab or assignment; however this is not guaranteed.
